This wiki page was created to focus on ways that media effects how women perceive their own bodies. Readers will be introduced to the unrealistic idea of how women should look and the lengths that they will go in order to meet societies perceptions.
The Main Idea
Through out the years media has had the largest impact on women's perceptions of themselves. Through ads, billboards, commercials and all other types of advertisement society is forced to see what the media thinks is the ideal woman. According to the media, a women needs to be beautiful and skinny in order to be sought after or admired. It is natural for women to feel inadiquate in today's society because the goals that are set for the 'ideal body' are very unrealistic and unattainable. The 'ideal body' is one of a woman who is skinny with no excess body fat, tall, she has large breasts and a firm buttocks. This image is seen thousands of times a day, media draws attention to other products by including the image of these unrealistic women.
The Scary Truth
This unrealistic idea of how women are supposed to look effects some people to the point of which they will harm their bodies. When a person dwells on their body image for a very long time, it becomes a part of who they are. It becomes a psychological issue that is practiced physically with eating disorders. The main eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia is a disorder in which a person, usually female is so overcome with a distorted image of her body that she starves herself. Bulimia is a disorder that is based on the action of binging and purging. In this situation the person will binge eat, or eat 40 times more than the usual amount eaten and will purge, or force themselves to vomit it all out. Both of these disorders are very unhealthy and come from the psychological idea that their body is not skinny enough.
What We Need to Do
We need to bring awareness to women college age that this is a problem in our society. We need to give them information on how to overcome the thoughts that they have about their bodies being inadeaquate. It is impossible for us to change the media and make women all over the United States feel better about themselves when they are constantly being compared to photo shopped models.
My Plan
We are going to start this endevour in our local communities at colleges, psychiatrists offices, hospitals and shopping malls. We will set up tables in these areas and offer support to women and girls going through a problem with their body image. We will give people information on support that they can get through doctors offices as well as psychiatrists. We will make sure that they know that they are not alone in feeling the way that they do. We will give out informational pamphlets on eating disorders and the terrible health problems that they cause. We will show images of celebrities and models that have not been photoshopped. In general, we will let women and girls know that we support them and there are out reach programs that they can look to for help. We want them to know that they are beautiful.
